The Other Side of Perception – Steampunk

Lust, wrath, vanity, avarice and jealousy are the most sinister passions of the humanity, but at the same time they are the impulsive force for the most deeds. All these components of the human being are revealed in the newest trend Steampunk that presents the alternative concept of the evolution on earth. This concept implies the idea of complete predominance of the steam machine and the overwhelming power of engineering. This mechanical renaissance madness is depicted in the strict opposition to people. The actual philosophy of steampunk emphasizes this contradiction of the perfectly constructed machines and the low human nature. At the same time this trend has turned out to be of a vast interest due to its stylistic details. Steampunk pictures the aspects of retro style, more precisely, the vicinity style, in the prism of futuristic perspective. So, you are welcome to look at the world around from the other side of perception – steampunk.

In this collection you will find the exaggerated and arabesque examples of steampunk. Hope, the time spent here will become a creative outlet and absorbing for you.

Title: The Fall of Icarus
Author: Nigel Quarless
Portfolio here

This is the interpretation of the notorious legend in the steampunk way. Icarus overestimated his abilities and decided to achieve the pick – to fly to the sun as close as it is possible. Unfortunately, it was not for him to reach the celestial body and he fell in the depth of ocean. The same we see here, on this illustration with one amendment – the wings of Icarus remind some innovative mechanism and he himself has rather up to date appearance.

Title: Hermes vs Argos
Author: Jeremy Love
Software: Photoshop

Sharp and rough tone of this image illustrates the main idea of the steampunk style. The tender fragile nudity of the girl on the foreground is opposed to the harsh steel machine behind her. This opposition is the key accent of this image and due to it the illustration becomes really awesome.

Title: Atlas
Author: Blas Ingraham
Software: Maya, Photoshop
Portfolio here

This perfect idealized construction of the earth model is presented in the steampunk context. It mixes the ideas of the old ages (the globe that is held by Atlant) and the futuristic expectations (it is seen in the way that the author renders the alarm clock). This whole construction presents itself the common thing in some unusual perspective.

We all know the captivating story about the wooden boy Pinocchio and here is its analogue, the same story with the authentic heroes, but in the different genre – steampunk. Title: Mermaid Song

That’s a wrong assumption that all mermaids are the creatures from the oceans or deep seas and you can understand it precisely after having a look at this very illustrations. Mechanic and complicated they create the reality that is peculiar to steampunk. Creative and awesome image!

Title: Mary Poppins
Author: Daniel Cestari
Software: 3ds max, mental ray, ZBrush
Portfolio

This Mary Poppins is a little bit strange, don’t you agree with me? Just like the one from the well known story, but at the same time a little bit different. The thing is hidden in the steampunk style that has inspired the author of this image to create such “modern” interpretation.

The chaos is everywhere and the normal level life of the city has come to end. This huge and overpowerful machine will not leave a thing after this fight. Beautiful. All of them.
Brisingammen is the most beautiful jewelry in the Nordic mythologi owned by the love, war and dead goddess Freja. It is made by 4 dwarfs, and the price for it, was that she had to spend one night with them all, separately.
    It’s a god story.
