December 12th, 2008Not so long ago the collection of Templates.com was enriched with free fractal wallpapers. These are awesome 3D Fractal Art Works created by Serdar Camlica and 3D Fiction Studio. His works are captivating and impressive, they provoke our imagination and amaze with their unique beauty and light effects. Each Fractal work, being abstract in its nature, poses some mystery and makes us plunge into another world, world of our imagination.
For those who are not familiar with Fractal art and don’t know how it looks like, it should be mentioned that Fractals are self-similar geometric objects with both aesthetical and scientific uses. Fractal Art is created by calculating fractal objects and representing the calculation results as still images, animations, music, or other media. Fractal art is usually created indirectly with the assistance of a computer, iterating through three phases: setting parameters of appropriate fractal software, executing the possibly lengthy calculation and evaluating the product.

So, today we would like to introduce you the author of these astonishing Fractal works – Serdar Camlica. He gladly agreed to tell about himself and his work.
Serdar Camlica was born in Munich in a working class Turkish family in Germany. In 1977 the family moved to Istanbul, where Serdar attended primary school. During these years he started to discover what he could do with the Basic programming language. Serdar’s first experiments were with trigonometrical shapes, and sound synthesis. Meanwhile he started taking basic piano and jazz lessons because music has always been his passion. He worked on progressive rock and jazz rock compositions and improvisations and played in the high school music band and then in the jazz and rock clubs. Serdar also performed several solo concerts.
Serdar Camlica: “During my first years of studying at Yildiz Technical University, my favorite course was technical perspective drawing. A year later I transferred to Mimar Sinan University Faculty of City Planning. During that time my musical career became more active, and I was improving my skills in computer based music. During my last year of studies in 1993 an older friend who was a very successful engineer introduced me to AutoCAD design, technical drawing and CAD (Computer Aided Design). After reading some AutoCAD books I found myself totally involved in the CAD and CG worlds.”
For almost two years Serdar has been working in Russia as an expert on 3D modeling, rendering, architectural drawings and CAD. In his spare time he studied 3D animation and fractals. When he returned home, he worked for several architecture companies as a virtual reality expert. In 1998 in order to escape work pressures, Serdar created his first digital art work “University”, a surreal piece. Due to the encouragement of his family and friends, he focused mainly on surreal and abstract works.
Serdar Camlica: “At the beginning I published them on free web servers and tried to improve my web presentation. My first abstract / surreal work “Teardrops” stayed a long time on the top of digitalart.org. In 2002 I decided to establish a professional domain name and chose 3dfiction.com, as I was doing 3D work and was a fan of science-fiction. In 2003 I was invited to submit my works to a Melbourne, Australia contest. I sent two works “The Doors” and “Rising” that were very popular and were exhibited as hard copies, and then published in local photography and design magazines. This is how I got into the world of digital art. In the course of next years I quit my full time job and worked as a freelancer, in order to focus more on digital art and music.”
In 2004 Serdar got the second prize at the Contest of Digital Art and Photography in Japan for his work “Atlantis”. The same year some of his works were published in the Chinese art book. In 2006, the curator of Woodson Art Museum in Wisconsin, USA, launched an exhibition “Electric Paint” of 20 digital artists’ works. Three of Serdar’s works were exhibited there. “Awaken – The Mind Travel”, 12 minute animation with original music, was selected as Animation of the Year 2004 at DigiFestival in Florence, Italy.
In 2008, while continuing to create still fractal art pieces, he started a new line, ‘Fractal Art’, focusing on motion effects. They start with a single composition, pass through many modulations, and finally turn into the original composition.
At the moment Serdar finds fractal based graphics and animations totally rewarding.
