How many unusual things have you seen in your life? At least, several of them. Such moments when you run into these astonishing things are always memorable because they stir the normal way of your life. Once you see them, they will stick in your memory for a long time and you will never forget them. In this collection you will find the most unusual and a little bit strange things. This collection features the creative imagination of digital artists that is presented in their works. I’m sure that most things that you will see here will be of a novelty to you. It is not easy to define them at a first sight, but I hope you will guess who these charming and cute creatures are.
So, let’s start our journey to the imaginary land of marvelous CG creatures.

***

Title: Light Bug
Author: Bobby Chiu
Software: Photoshop, Sketchbook Pro
<a href="http://www.imaginismstudios.com"target="_blank">Portfolio here

This work is created by one of my favorite artists Bobby Chiu. All his works are creative, expressive and emotional. He creates his marvelous characters in such a way: he uses different elements of various things together and this mix turns out to be a new stunning creature, like this one.

***

Title: Weird Little Creature
Author: Bobby Chiu
Software: Photoshop
<a href="http://www.imaginismstudios.com"target="_blank">Portfolio here

You will never guess who this little weird creature is and so do I. It reminds me the little tiger that is pictured in the shape of a bunny without long hears. The least elements of this painting are great. This little nose, so sweet look of the eyes, soft and fluffy hears make the mug of this creature charming.

***

Title: Arnold the Mouse
Author: Patrick Beaulieu
Software: 3ds max
<a href="http://www.squeezestudio.com"target="_blank">Portfolio here

Hmmm, according to the title of this illustration it is a mouse, but it is really a funny one. It is pictured in the cartoon style with exaggerated elements like oversized head and amazing shining eyes. Its tabby tail is a great work! It should certainly be a source of pride for this cute mouse.

***

Title: Crossroads
Author: Eduardo Martin Julve
Software: Maya
<a href="http://www.theposmaker.com"target="_blank">Portfolio here

These both look like two dimensions of existence: good and evil. These two notions are presented as angel and devil, female and male correspondingly. If you look attentively in this illustration you will also notice such interesting element as the Chinese symbol that shows the unity of the things in nature.

***

Title: Good Boy!
Author: Ramon Aced
Software: Painter, Photoshop
<a href="http://www.ramitxon.wordpress.com/"target="_blank">Portfolio here

The origin of this strange creature is unknown, but one thing is obvious. It is the devoted pet of the girl that is depicted on the right side of the picture. We will never find out who is bad and who is wrong among presented here characters, but we can definitely understand who is a good boy here.

***

Title: Hyperactive
Author: Ramon Acedo
Software: Hyperactive
Painter, Photoshop
<a href="http://ramitxon.wordpress.com/"target="_blank">Portfolio here

According to the background story of this picture these crazy creatures were found by human beings on one of the remote planets. They were adopted as pets. People liked these adorable creatures for their bright appearance and docility, but then it turned out that they were just unbearable. Their hyperactivity became the reason for everybody’s headache.

***

Title: My Red Bike
Author: Bobby Chiu
Software: Photoshop, Sketchbook Pro
<a href="http://www.imaginismstudios.com"target="_blank">Portfolio here

Ok, it seems that everything is obvious here and the creature that is depicted in this picture is a dog. But why is it so colossal? According to the idea of its creator, this picture shows us the terms between the master and the dog, the devotion of the pet and his readiness to defend his master from any kind of threat.

***

Title: Red Riding Hood
Author: Bobby Chiu
Software: Photoshop
<a href="http://www.imaginismstudios.com"target="_blank">Portfolio here

Can you even imagine that these are familiar characters from the well-known tale for all of us? Most of us read this story in the childhood and we liked it. This cute interpretation tells us about the alien Red Hood and her alien servant Wolf. Great and funny concept!

***

Title: Chito-Grito
Author: Nikolay Yeliseyev
Software: Photoshop
<a href="http://www.yeliseyev.ru"target="_blank">Portfolio here

This cute creature is really strange. It reminds me some hamster or some type of a guinea-pig. The only thing that puzzles is its coloring, it is the same as the cow’s one. It is sitting silently in the aquarium and holding something that it has stolen somewhere. Great pic!

***

Title: Mr. Squouch
Author: Patrick Beaulieu
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop
<a href="http://www.squeezestudio.com"target="_blank">Portfolio here

Mr. Squouch that is depicted here possesses some features of the octopus, don’t you think so? The expression of its mug that you can notice here expresses the highest degree of astonishment. Perhaps, it has seen something that has impresses it greatly.

***

Title: Coca-Cola
Author: Daniel Rice
Software: 3ds max, Brazil r/s, Digital Fusion
<a href="http://www.blur.com"target="_blank">Portfolio here

Not one, but six amusing creatures are depicted in this illustration. Little and cute, they draw your attention immediately. There is no use even try to guess who they are, it will remain a little riddle for us. Only the author knows exactly their origin. Anyway, this image is stunning!

***

Title: Magic Fluff
Author: Ysoner Yurtseven
Software: Maya, mental ray, Photoshop, ZBrush
<a href="http://www.krillstudios.com"target="_blank">Portfolio here

Here is the fantastic scene from the life of magic forest inhabitants. Some of them are familiar to you, the others will puzzle you a bit with their strange, but cute appearance. Everything is excellent about this painting: the lovely characters, the ambience, the way the author presents the whole atmosphere.

***

Title: Bee
Author: Ysoner Yurtseven
Software: Photoshop
<a href="http://www.krillstudios.com"target="_blank">Portfolio here

This sunny illustration impresses with its bright style and execution. The characters that are depicted here look like bees, but I’m not quite sure about it. Anyway, they are cute and lovely. So, it is for you to guess who they are.

***

Title: Sea Life
Author: Bobby Chiu
Software: Photoshop
<a href="http://www.imaginismstudios.com"target="_blank">Portfolio here

The unstoppable and vast imagination of this artist is striking! This sea creature is so amazing! Even if we don’t understand completely what it is, it is captivating to find some familiar details in its appearance. Besides, if you look attentively, you will certainly find in this picture more curious creatures from the underwater world. How many of them are here?

The genre of the portrait painting is one of the most complicated. The point is that it is aimed at rendering not just the appearance of people, but their intricate inner world, their soul. It happens so often that in the portrait you can notice certain details that are not seen at a first sight when you look at a person. In such a way, his mood, his feelings are depicted on the canvas. No matter how people behave, what is their appearance, the portrait will reveal something beyond these superficial things. It is like the deep feeling of the person, the detailed look at him from some prism of comprehension. Besides, the portrait discloses not only the essence of the poser, but it also gives the idea about its creator. The artist always paints his attitude and emotions in his works. Black and white portraits are most precise, most faithful and truthful way of depicting people. They never lie and hide under the layers of colors the truth about the person. These contrasting colors make the painting rather stylish. You can read in them all the palette of emotions and moods.

This collection from the web consists of awesome examples of black and white CG paintings. They are all full of passion (obvious or a hidden one) and style. Hope, these aesthetic artworks will inspire you.

Title: I Said No
Author: Johnnie Estill II
Software: Painter, Photoshop
<a href="http://www.digitalenvi.com/"target="_blank">Portfolio here

Who will tell that black and white painting lacks for emotions and brightness? Look at this very work. I haven’t seen for a long time so emotional and passionate painting. The author has rendered everything so precisely that it seems that you can even hear this girl screaming when you look at this work.

***

Title: Uber Flirt

What do you see in this picture? What is depicted here, the appealing girl or just her mood? I dare say, that both things are to be found here. The beautiful girl with the expression of the uber flirt that can be easily read in her face. Stylish and impressive image!

This fashionable drawing is created in the style that is taken from the pages of Vogue magazine. Hyper-stylish and appealing, it corresponds to the way in which Vogue presents its models. This black and white drawing calls the aesthetic feelings.

Title: Self Portrait
Author: Denisa Mrackova
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop, VRay

This image is a self portrait of Czech digital artist Denisa Mrackova. She is young, but in spite of this, mature and you can make sure of it just browsing her portfolio. This work is done as the sketch in black and white colors and here you can see its high-grade technical execution.

Title: Flirt
Author: Lyndsey Hayes
Software: Photoshop, Poser
<a href="http://lyndseyh.cgsociety.org/gallery/"target="_blank">Portfolio here

One more interpretation of the notion “Flirt”. The author renders his own point of view, the way that he imagines flirt of a woman. Though this very piece of painting is created in black and white rigid colors, its tone is appealing and sensual.

This piece of digital art is the interpretation of the original photo made by Lonnie Hoke. Now you can see that the artist has succeeded in his intention to render the original work in the amazing way. This white sketch looks exquisite and magnificent.

Here is black and white portrait of the actress Mia Kirschner. She looks confused here: the dark shades under the eyes, with the brows that are knit together and the sad expression of the mouth. This painting renders the state of a woman that is in the grip of deep emotions.

My long-cherished dream is one about the horse. The imagination paints with brushes the early morning when the sun appears on the horizon and lights up the sky with the gentle amber sparkling, on the vast field covered with grass and flowers rushes the herd of horses. Magnificent silence and clearness are exploded in a minute with the tramping of the hoofs. In rapid space beautiful horses fly across the valley to the far mountains. They gallop, fly, trot and call pure rapture. When the air becomes saturated with the beams of the sun and the first hints of the day, you can see quit well this awesome scene. You can admire for hours their grace, the breathtaking speed of their race, wonderful eyes where you can find kindness and beams of sun. Untamed, full of energy of the north wind, they are striving for freedom and for the vast spaces of the fascinating lands. Never-ending valleys are their realm. Their spirit is the wild one, full of beauty and strength.

Have you ever seen the alien, the real one from some weird fantasies? For a moment you look at each other with surprise, you both are puzzled and can’t get to the point of the situation. We fly in our dreams to the other planets, imagine uplift creatures, but we don’t believe that they really exist. The aliens, in their turn, are definitely sure that all that talks about people and the human race are just idle rumors and silly gossips. Perhaps, our worlds are much more closer to one another that we can even imagine, and the meeting of a person and the alien is quite a possible thing. It is also possible that such occasions have taken place some time ago, but anyone knows about it, because some aliens can take the human appearance, and some people are aliens in their soul. Anyway, if we believe in them, they really exist, at least in our imagination.
So, let’s take a trip to the world where people and aliens live side by side. They coexist in peace and this neighborhood is a friendly one. Let’s start.

Title: Blush Responce, Alien Adoption
Author: Aaron Yant
<a href="http://www.aaronyant.com"rel="nofollow"target="_blank">Portfolio here

Is this a real transracial family, or just the alien mother with her adopted human son? I abandon myself to the idea that the latter variant is the right one. If children are the object of your affection, it doesn’t matter what ethnicity they are, and whether they are adopted on not.

Title: First Contact
Author: Monsit Jangariyawong
Software: Maya, ZBrush
<a href="http://monsitj.atspace.com/"rel="nofollow"target="_blank">Portfolio here

The first contact of the human being and the alien can be unpredictable, particularly, if they have never even believed in each other. This confrontation is uncontemplated and striking for each of them and, of course, it makes them puzzled for a minute.

Title: Governor
Author: Tomasz Jedruszek

Who have told that the man is the Lord of Creation? Sometimes even axioms need the confirmation. This image breaks the mentioned above stereotype and shows us the alternative reality. The alien chimp here is presented as the governor, as someone with the higher power and the one, who dominates over the human beings.

Title: Learning to Read
Author: S. Blaise Ingraham
Blaise Ingraham" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-1135" />

The Human race has decided to bring the light of knowledge to the aliens. Sharing knowledge is a good way to set up a contact and that’s why people give lessons to aliens on the board of their space ship. The large library with a vast collection of folios will certainly help them.

* * *
Title: Music Lesson
Author: Daniele Scerra

Clarinets, flutes, bass-viol and musical notations that are littered everywhere – a real disaster instead of a common musical lesson. The pretty girl in the role of the teacher tries her best to calm down the pupils who have cut loose and now are just having fun instead of a lesson.

Friends can be of different sizes, colors and ages, these facts are not of the previous importance. The matter is the terms between friends, their relations and succor, the ability to share white moments of life and black ones.

* * *
Title: Finito!
Author: Miguel Angelo
Software: 3ds max

They met each other and become friends, the alien and the girl. Their meeting took place yesterday or just in the dreams of one of them, it is not so important. The main thing is that they have found each other and from this time solitude doesn’t stare their faces.

Are you ready for a face-off with the alien? Are you sure that you will not feel even a slight trembling and anxiety? Don’t you think that it is a bird of ill omen to see face to face the alien creature, the creature that exists only in your imagination or in some other parallel world? If all the answers are “no”, dispose oneself for the most unexpected things that can sometimes take place in our life.

Title: Contact
Author: Seail Jang

This opposition of the girl from the human race and the alien from some uplift universe is striking. Still, the girl doesn’t look like the real human paying attention at some mechanical parts of her body. Perhaps, she is a kind of android that only look like the real person.

Creepy, but at the same time captivating image. It depicts the representative of the alien world in comparison with the human being. Such unusual terms sometimes take place, so it goes. Aliens and humans can be on a short leg, definitely.

This strange scene takes place somewhere in the isolated desert. This procession that consists of the virgin on the alien wends its way to the distant places. Nobody knows where exactly they are going: to the sea, to the desolated valley or to the hell…

This is a little present for the lovers of science fiction – the stunning interpretation of the alien reality. The girl is swimming in the dolphin in the depth of the ocean. Around them there are plenty of the similar creatures. This underwater world is so captivating and enchanting.

Here we continue elaborating the theme about the opposition of striking androids and people.

This post will give you a kind of future perspective of the technical progress on earth. These awesome images develop the theme of innovative creatures that possess the human appearance, but at the same time they are highest qualitative ranking androids. The mentioned above spitting illustrations of people and robots create a strong and ambiguous impression: on one side they are similar to people (in their appearance) and on the other they represent eye-catching metal surfaces and intricate schemes. Being the emanation of the human fantasy and the result of progressive technologies these robots bring to life the long-cherished idea of humanity about the artificial integrity. Humanlike machines have always been of a vast interest for all people and this post will nourish such an interest.

Here you will find the great mix of imagination and reality, the desired things and the existing entity. Turn on your imagination and admire this incredible collection.

What makes this image interesting for me is its original and wonderful execution. The author’s technique is great and it creates a real masterpiece, not just a simple CG work. The main idea and the execution are impressive!

Here is one more variation on the theme of body shopping. This girl is trying on the parts of the legs in order to find the right size and the desired shape. According to the author’s idea such a strange shopping is a kind of future perspective.

Artificial beauty cold and free from emotions and feelings is perfectly rendered on this image. This lifeless tone and the clear technique show us the robot with the appearance of the beautiful female and current instead of blood that runs the wires inside it.

In this stunning image the author speaks about the imaginary future perspective when it would be possible even perform a body shopping. Personally I’m not sure that it is a rosiness, but it’s only my point of view. Nevertheless, it is an awesome pic and it is created with such a maturity.

Impulsive and impressive image. I like the way the author renders his character: brilliant technique and interesting concept. This image is one from the series in which he pictures himself in different guises.

What can evoke a smile? Some good wheeze, the smile of the person near you that will arouse your positive feelings or just the beauty of the bright spring day. Anyway, when the smile touches your lips and the pretty dimples appear on your cheeks your mood is light and you immediately become high-spirited. What can be better than a pleasant, open smile that is so radiant and sincere? Smile graciously and the world will give you its smile. Beam and shine on! Never stop basking the sunniness, savor each moment of your life, just capre diem and don’t let anything distress you. Share a bit of your happiness, light and high spirit with other people and the world around will become warm-hearted. Come up smiling and be joyful!

She paints with hope, desire, passion and it can’t leave us indifferent. Every single image for Drazenka is a kind of exciting adventure throughout the creative process. She derives inspiration from plenty of books and the art of Renaissance and Victorian ages. Her ability to apply the diversity of techniques in different projects makes her output entirely exclusive.
For today Drazenka Kimpel works as an illustrator and designer for Magicgate Software Inc. To admire her works just visit a <a href="http://www.creativedust.com/"rel="nofollow"target="_blank">website of Drazenka Kimpel.

Hello Drazenka. Please, tell a couple of words about yourself and your family. Did you ever get formal training or were you mostly self-taught?

Hello! I was born in Zagreb, Croatia where I lived until I was 20 years old. Due to the lack of prosperity in my own country, I had to leave everything in search for a better future. I worked for years in magic and illusion shows on Cruise Ships, sailing around the world, which finally anchored me to South Florida where I still live. I left too soon to get any kind of formal art education. I am completely self- taught. I learn as I go along.

Usually the talent is propagated. Is anybody in your family related to arts?

I have no idea where my talent came from. I don’t recall my parents ever mentioning anybody in our family being gifted for any form of art. As I think back now, it was difficult for me to get the understanding and support I needed to pursue a career in art.

What subjects do you like to explore most in your work and where does the interest arise from?

What intrigues me the most, are fantastic worlds and its people. I grew up reading fairy tales and drawing my own characters on paper. Most of the inspiration now still comes from reading books and envisioning characters and their surroundings. I love to explore the era of Renaissance and Victorian times. I am inspired a great deal by rich elegance and the style of these two periods.

I wonder if you still have the works of your earliest ages. Could you show them?

I haven’t kept the collection of my art way back then. Most of the very early drawings were all given away and by not having a camera at the time, I was not able to capture the images. Here are a couple of older paintings from my cross over to CG. They are: “Equilibrium” and “Wuthering Heights”

What helps you stay creative and be in touch with the situation in the world of computer graphics? And which artists, contemporary or classic, do you get most inspiration from?

Keeping up with news from the art world is not very difficult. There are all sorts of online and printed materials available to keep in touch with the technology and to learn what new developments could impact my creative growth. It is hard however, to keep up with hardware updates. New tools require better, faster machines. It gets costly very quickly…
There are a lot of artists that inspire me in many different ways. One of the first artists I’ve noted was <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Rackham"rel="nofollow"target="_blank">Arthur Rackham. I was reading a book which was illustrated by Rackham and with every new illustration my imagination grew larger. I was drawn by his ability to portray characters with beautiful line work and translucent layers of muted color. Not to mention the elegance of the characters, even the ones meant to be scary. The second name I would like to mention is <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maxfield_Parrish"rel="nofollow"target="_blank">Maxfield Parrish, whose colors and subject matter absolutely seduced my eyes.

What is the most important thing when you are starting a new project?

I need to have a pretty good idea of what the final image or design should look like, before I start working on it. Usually I start with a few concept drawings first, to acquaint myself with the composition as a whole. To determine a good composition is most important in preliminary stages of any project. Once you get your hands deep into work, it’s hard to change things around. The final product can look pretty messy and people will see you were struggling with it.

Do you usually ask for suggestions regarding your works improvement?

Yes. I always encourage others to do so. There is always room for improvement. I have to be ready to take criticism and suggestions from others. No two pair of eyes will see things the same way. If suggestions are valid and have merit, I will take them into consideration, get back to the illustration and make improvements. Then again, I also have the freedom to decide which ones would work the best on a particular image. I think it’s important to listen and learn. It’s the only way to move forward.

“Monarch” by Drazenka Kimpel

When you are involved into commercial projects what is more important to you – your personal vision of arts or a customer’s opinion?

I think it depends on the project. Customer’s ideas and input during the process simply can not be ignored. There are some projects where I am given complete creative freedom but there are also projects in which the customer wants to be actively involved. It is understandable. Customers have their own vision. There are certain aspects of a project an artist would see differently and possibly inaccurately (such as the “feel” of the company, work place, their goals and visions as a whole). That’s where customer input is necessary.
I’ve had a couple of projects of such, where a customer wanted to see the progress on daily bases. I was not very thrilled about it at first, but upon placing the finishing touches, it looked very different than what my original idea was and I had to agree with this kind of collaboration. However, this kind of situations does not fit every project. It is ultimately my job to talk to a customer so we can make the right decision, which will help me deliver the best product both parties would be very happy with.

What is your main achievement in CG? Do you have a favorite work among works created by yourself? If yes, why is it exactly this one?

Well, that’s difficult to answer. There is really no achievement I can recognize as a “main achievement.” I think over the years as my style and technique has developed, I can say that my knowledge has been a slow evolution rather than “great big bang”. There is still a mountain of things I would like to conquer as an artist, so if you ask me that question in couple of years, I would probably be able to answer.
As far as my favorite works, I would have to say it’s the piece called “Mother”. It is not one of my more known pieces but it’s very special to me because it was created at the time I was at my worst emotional state of mind.

What piece of advice would you give to those who are just starting out their design career?

I’ve been saying this for years and I stick to it…
Practice a lot and everyday! Persevere in what you do and don’t give up too easy. Keep your eyes and mind open to learning something new and remember; you can not become good overnight.

Till Nowak is a 28 year old digital artist, designer and filmmaker from Germany. His work has been exhibited in hundreds of international film festivals, featured at SIGGRAPH 2006 and 2007 and was awarded with more than 35 first prizes, for example in Annecy or at the AFI Fest Hollywood. The shortfilm called “Delivery”, a kind of a science fiction fairy tale, that was created as his graduation work, changed his life having brought him fame and popularity.

Currently Till is working for creative agencies, film productions, and independent projects. Besides his studio work Till has given lectures about his workflows in international events, and worked as jury member in various film festivals. Undoubtedly, he is a gifted person with huge potential! but let him personally tell about himself.

* * *

Please, tell about yourself, your background and education. How did you get into computer graphics?

I was born in 1980, my parents are artists, too, and so I was always surrounded by art and creativity. As a child I had the chance to play a lot with my fathers videocamera and super8 cameras and do little stop motion films. My mother bought me my first computer when I was 12. The mix of art, film and my PC gave me so many possibilities and thrilled me in so many ways that I began to work professionally very early. When I was 19 I founded my studio “frameboX”. I started as my own boss and I always wanted it to stay that way, so I never worked in another company, not even for one day and not even as an intern. First I did a lot of classical print and web design, but over the years I specialized in computer generated images and animations. Besides my independent artworks and the jobs for TV and creative agencies, I was travelling around the world during the past three years, mainly because of film festival events in which I participated with my shortfilm “Delivery”.

“Can’t Smile without You” by Till Nowak.

You studied media design at the University of Applied Sciences. What knowledge did you obtain there?

While I was already working professionally as a kind of small production company for many clients and TV stations, I decided to study “media design” in my home town Mainz. It was a really difficult time to keep my business running and be present at the university. I didn’t sleep much and I am happy that this double life is over. From the technical side I wouldn’t have needed it, but it gave me a completely new horizon about the artistic side of media and cinema – so it was worth it.

“The Shaved Bumblebee” by Till Nowak.

As we know, in 2005 you graduated the University with the shortfilm “DELIVERY”. What is this film about? What idea does it convey?

“Delivery” is kind of a science fiction fairy tale, about an old man who lives next to a big, dark factory and cares about a little flower, perhaps the last flower on earth. One day he receives a mysterious package, nobody knows where it came from. This package contains a magic portal which gives him the power to change his environment as if he was God. Now he has to decide how to use this power. My goal was to create a very dense visual and musical composition. It has some philosophical science fiction content, but also an environmental message. It is a utopic story about the importance of every humans individual decision on how to deal with environmental problems.

“Delivery” still by Till Nowak.

I produced this shortfilm as my graduation work when I was studying parallel to my professional job. I didn’t expect this little film to change my life, but finally it all went really crazy. First I entered it only into some small festivals and didn`t have big plans with it, I just thought that one or two festivals would be nice to show the film and meet some people. Then the film won awards in the first three festivals and I recognized that there was much more potential. From this point I started to enter the film into many festivals all over the world and an exciting journey for me began. Over three years I travelled to Australia, Korea, USA, Spain, and many other countries and until now the film was screened in more than 200 festivals, is sold to TV stations in some countries and won more than 35 awards. My horizon completely changed, I met many great people, got many interesting offers and it gave me the most important impulse: To change my focus from commercial advertising work to independent art and cinema. Most recently I released a DVD with the shortfilm, a documentary about my work and many special features which you can buy directly on my website www.framebox.com

Do you usually show your works to anybody before posting them on the Internet? Who is your main critic?

Yes, I show my works usually to 5-10 friends, who are often also designers, and there I get usually some really important feedback which I then evaluate and often include. Listening to feedback is extremely important, but you also need the strength to stay true to your concept, which means that it is not always the right way to fulfil your critiques wishes if you are sure about certain decisions.

You actively take part in many cultural events and exhibitions. You even tried yourself as a jury member (Dresden Film Festival, Sehsuechte Film Festival, Pontault-Combault Film Festival, France and Munich International Festival of Film Schools). What are the criteria you use for estimating the competitive works? What things do you usually take into account first: creativity or technical execution?

Creativity is more important, but if the technical execution is bad enough to distract from the good content then it doesn’t help either. But usually the mistake is to have something technically brilliant with a flat content. There are many factors like uniqueness, originality, surprise, technical execution, thematical relevance, it’s difficult to put this into certain rules.

“Android” by Till Nowak.

Where do you find ideas for your works? What inspires you?

Most of my inspiration comes from films, but also from absorbing everything which is unusual and funny in a twisted way, usually just products, stories, art or anything else in my environment. As a child I was not allowed to watch a lot of TV, but somehow I got the chance to watch some films including “Dune”, “Alien” and “Star Wars”. Through my parents – they are both artists – I came in touch with the films of Jacques Tati, Charles Chaplin and a lot of classical art. This mixture must have had a strong influence on my own style. I see myself still as a beginner learning and developing my own style, but there are elements that you can find in most of my works: I like to work with twilight and indirect light; I care a lot about precision and tension in the two-dimensional composition of the images elements. I like a dusty feeling instead of a clean cartoon look. I like monochromatic color schemes instead of many colors. And to speak about the content: most of my works are mixing and twisting the common dimensions and relations between objects, sometimes combined with a subtle humor and a bit of science fiction romantic.

In my work you can find similarities to the painters of romanticism and besides that I was always fascinated by the works of artists like M.C. Escher, H.R. Giger, Erwin Wurm, David La Chapelle as well as filmmakers like David Fincher, Jean Pierre Jeunet or Terry Gilliam. They are all masters of creating a perfectly thrilling experience and at the same time create their own totally believable world. The audience has to completely dive into this world and forget to doubt its existence. During the last 10 years I tried out almost every field of digital creativity, like design, music, programming, photography – and finally filmmaking and animation brings it all together, which makes it for me personally the most exciting level of creating art.

Have you ever been tired of your work, or on the contrary, is computer graphics a rest for you?

I have never been tired of working with visual creativity, but sometimes I have been tired of working for advertising projects. The fascination of computer graphics is a combination of many aspects: It’s the freedom to create whatever I have in mind, it’s the endless possibilities where your imagination is the only limit, it’s the efficiency to produce huge scenes with nothing than a little computer and it’s the non-linearity and flexibility which makes it possible to begin without knowing where it will lead you to. It’s like a never boring toy and it combines form, motion, light, timing and much more in a single medium. Within the field of visual arts there are so many possibilities that it will probably never feel tired of it. My work as an artist and illustrator becomes a rest when I have enough time to play around and work on my own ideas, it is not a rest if a client is chasing me with a deadline…

You are an award winning artist. How did all these awards change your life?

Awards of course drag a lot of attention from people to my work. It was very important for me to visit all of these film festivals, because real relationships and friendships started there, sometimes just by drinking a beer together after the screening or being in the same hotel as someone else. For example Aarman animations hired me as a concept artist after meeting them in a Cafe during the animation festival in Annecy, and there are many more examples of really important relationships which started at film festivals. Not every festival or award is important, sometimes it’s just a piece of paper and nothing ever happens with it, but in many cases it was. So I can just encourage everybody to enter your best work to contests and festivals, travel to the events, show your work and meet people, it really works!

I could eventually have become a scientist, because I was crazy about physics, space, etc. as a child, but more likely I would have become a musician. I actually had produced a record and some other releases before I was 20, and if you dig really deep in my website you can still find some of my old electronic music productions. But one day I totally switched to the visual side and gave up my audio studio.

What advice would you suggest to our audience and beginning CG artists? What are the typical mistakes to avoid while producing a 3D image?

I would like to point out how important improvisation and visual cheating is to me, because it leads to efficiency, like a direct brain-to-paper-connection. I think it’s very important to find your own solutions and invent your own workflows or techniques instead of using too many specialized plugins or reading in the manual for every individual solution. My project files sometimes look messy and sometimes I use methods which are strange from a professional point of view, but I just find it very efficient to use the most simple and most direct solution and head directly towards a final result without any complex tools, even if I lose a bit of technical perfection with it. In my own experience the artistic vision survives easier if you just look for cheaty workarounds instead of using complex solutions. To better explain this attitude you can try my video tutorial.

When I talk to young artists and students I sometimes have the feeling that the most typical mistake to drown in self critiques. Many young artists think their work is not good enough so they feel blocked by doubting themselves, never finish a piece and don’t get forward. In my opinion this is often a result of admiring and studying the work of other artists too much instead of working on their own style. This is why I don’t read many art books or visit many exhibitions, I often feel that it’s better for my output if I don’t absorb too much of other peoples work.
